Spring and summer fashion this year brings an eclectic mix of old and new when it comes to sunglasses. From the bright, vibrant colours to the more classic muted styles, this season’s trends offer something for your own individual tastes.
“Big lenses and frames, as well as funky patterns are in for this spring [and] summer season,” said Emily De Guzman of Horizon Eye Care, located in Portage Place mall.

A bold colour palette is the highlight of what’s available throughout the spring and summer. A vast array of hues and tones such as turquoise, red, pink and lime make it easy to choose that perfect pair of shades which you can swap and exchange with a variety of outfits. Neon and clear frames are definitely big trends that are fun to sport as an eye-catching accessory to brighten up any ensemble. Pastels are also being seen in soft blues and cool tones which will definitely add that summer flair to your wardrobe this season.

Patterns are more prevalent than ever when it comes to accessorizing your eyes. Animal patterns like zebra, leopard and stripes are a definite craze. The arrival of bold, colourful prints in many of this season’s collections has made shades the hottest accessory, and gives a sense of excitement to an otherwise plain pair of specs. Combine with a simple, understated outfit for a sense of the unexpected, or pair with a variety of designs and prints for an ultra chic look.

As fashion recycles itself, past fashions return with a refreshed and refined take. Thick, bold frames often referred to as “Geek Chic” are all the rage with bold prescription glasses and sunglasses as well. The “Jackie O” style, which seems to have remained from seasons past, continues to re-invent itself into a modernized feel with oversized lenses in various shapes.

When shopping for sunglasses it is important to choose a style that suits you and is able to provide proper protection for your eyes.

For people with a round or heart-shaped face, De Guzman recommends choosing a square or rectangular shape.

A square-shaped face requires just the opposite with an oval, round frame.

Many people simply choose sunglasses that they like and don’t consider the shape or the quality of the frame and lens. However, you often get what you pay for.

“Polarized lenses [which are a type of laminated lens] help you see better through glare versus a tinted lens [which is a dyed lens],” De Guzman said. “These lenses are the best bet when it comes to protecting your eyes from the sun and offer UV protection especially when doing outdoor activities such as water sports, fishing, etc.”

Horizon Eye Care offers a vast selection of frames including exclusive brands like Roberto Cavalli, Coach, Christian Dior and Gucci. However, funky shapes and styles can be found in all price ranges.

Whether it be the bold and bright or the subdued timeless look, the range of sunglass fashions out there includes something for everybody’s unique style.
