SONS OF YORK - Black and White Summer

Sons of York are a trio of Winnipeg brothers that seem to have come to us from a different time. Is this Coppola’s Outsiders Curtis brothers on the cover, making hearts crumble and ready to rumble? Inside, the disc hearkens back to a time when rock was young: adolescent stories of being chased by rival gangs and dreaming of the day we can blow this one-horse town for the big city. There’s tight harmonies and jangly riffs hearkening the Everly Brothers and the Crickets, with the punch of New York’s The Del-Lords delivering some solid urban roots rock. It’s novel music, but it makes me feel like I’m listening to a Sondheim/Bernstein musical where the lyrics are the narrative to a ‘50s turf-war and doesn’t hold up for the whole disc. However, I definitely think they would be a great live act. Check them out Friday, Feb. 12 at the Academy.
