Kim Reimer - Not the First Girl

Not the First Girl, the sophomore album Manitoba’s Kim Reimer will release this Saturday, Feb. 28 at Shannon’s, is a fitting title. Every facet of this middle of the road country album has been over explored. Even within standards as effervescent as those found within the pop-country genre, Reimer’s music and subject matter are too familiar and inconsequential to take to heart. This is a shame because on a few of these tracks, notably Take Home to Your Mama and Tennessee, Reimer’s charm and catchy songwriting chops sound like they could potentially wrestle the torch away from Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, et al. Akin to driving past her nostalgic Halfway Tree, Reimer’s music is in between stations; straddling an affable congeniality with banal subject matter and lyrics. Hopefully the rest of her journey takes her through more back-streets and haphazard dirt roads, thus making the ride worth hearing about.
