U of W staffer wins award for community service

Dedicated University of Winnipeg staff member Kevin Chief recently won the Future Leaders of Manitoba Award in the category of Community Service.

An advocate for inner-city children, Chief is a role model and an inspirational co-ordinator of U of W’s Innovative Learning Centre team. The team has developed and offers original programs aimed at closing the graduation gap. The programs offered are grounded in the philosophy of connecting elementary and secondary students to their school community so that youth stay in class and become university students.

A product of the inner city himself, Chief attended U of W, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree, and he is currently working on his master of arts in education.

U of W grad studies joins national networks

The University of Winnipeg announced its membership to the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies (CAGS) and the Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies (WCDGS). The U of W was voted in as an institutional member of the CAGS at its November 2009 annual general meeting. The WCDGS included the U of W in its ranks on Jan. 29, 2010. The CAGS was founded in 1962 to promote graduate education and university research through meetings, publications and advocacy. The Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies was established in 1974. The purpose of the organization is to promote the effective pursuit of graduate studies at Western Canadian Universities.

Undergrads get paid

Seventeen undergraduate students at the U of W recently engaged in high-level research projects in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. Each student was awarded $4,500 by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Students that applied for the award had to meet eligibility and submit an application with an NSERC-funded supervisor, which was forwarded to be part of the NSERC-USRA competition. The competition was presided over by members of the Student Research and Awards Committee.
