AMELIA CURRAN Hunter, Hunter

Her first album crafted with the support of a label with major distribution, we reap the benefits of the promise of mass exposure. The pressure to turn out a hit record is definitely felt in the deliberate veering towards full arrangements and a more upbeat feel. Her latest retains the diverse songwriting styles as she swings through backwoods Appalachia (Hands…) on her way to heartache (Julia). Swing to the recurring cabaret of The Dozens, not unlike All the Ladies from 2006/08’s War Brides. Effortless Waits-ish drunken introspection is replaced with mordant deliberation and confidence more akin to Anne Murray: full voice dripping with the salt of seaside life. She is one to watch. See her live at the Times Change(d) this Sunday, Sept. 27.
