In the article "Whiny femmes is a platform for a much-needed vent," we attributed a quote to Jules Hardy, though it was from Christina Hajjar. We also published a shortened version of another quote from Hajjar, and have replaced it with the complete quote for full context.

The article "South Osborne speakeasy" on page 14 stated that Blind Tiger was the only speakeasy restaurant in Winnipeg. This is not correct - there is another similar venue in Winnipeg.
A quote given by Jack Moleshi was also incorrectly transcribed to indicate that the word "speakeasy" was an entry code, not an alternate phrase for whispering.

The article "Funny Men" on page 8 of the Oct 22 issue stated that comedian Amber Daniels was a last-minute addition to a comedy showcase lineup. That was incomplete. Both Aisha Alfa and Amber Daniels were added to the lineup. The article also states that the showcase was almost entirely white men but did not include the fact that Chad Anderson, a First Nations comic, was part of the original lineup.

    Clarification

As has been reported in other media, the publisher of The Uniter and columnist Josh Benoit were recently sued by Mayor Sam Katz for allegedly defaming him in a column that was published in The Uniter in the December 4, 2013 edition. The column was entitled “The Local Political Blunder”.

Although the lawsuit alleged that the column accused the Mayor of being a criminal, that was not the intention of the column. The column consisted of satirical commentary that did not accuse the Mayor of being a criminal but rather was intended to be a fair comment on a matter of public interest.

The Uniter regrets if anyone interpreted the column to be anything other than a satirical comment as stated.

An article in our December 5th issue (The Local Political Blunder) stated that former City of Winnipeg CAO Phil Sheegl received “nearly a half-million dollars” in severance upon his resignation. While estimates vary between $242,000 and $443,000, the true value of Mr. Sheegl’s compensation will not be made publicly available until July 1, 2014.

The article “’Welcomed with open arms’” (Nov. 29, page 3) incorrectly stated that Russ Hilsher spent time in Stony Mountain Institution.
Also in that issue, the article “Immortalizing the voices of West End residents” (page 5) stated that West Central Streets is the University of Winnipeg’s first digitally archived publication. That is incorrect. It is the university’s first attempt to digitize an external publication. The University of Winnipeg has many digitized publications online, as does the Archives.

In the story “Rape survivor decries judge’s controversial decision” (March 10, page 3), The Uniter we wrote that Parliament had legislated a mandatory minimum sentence of three years jail time for cases of serious sexual assault in 2007.
In fact, Parliament simply legislated against the use of conditional sentences in sexual assault cases. The minimum of three years is established in case law, namely the Alberta Court of Appeal case of R v. Sandercock.

Ms. Klassen did not say these words. The quotation marks were inadvertently inserted during the editing process.
