Marcela Salazar

I am a Chilean-born Canadian artist who studied Graphic Arts in Chile. I moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and graduated from the Advertising Art Program at Red River College. In my abstract paintings I used acrylic paint and I have also explored printmaking, specifically Monoprint, which has allowed me to work with different materials. Most of my paintings are abstract and are created with the use of acrylics, oils, and mixed media. I create abstract paintings because the final piece is unpredictable. I may have an idea on how to start a specific painting but the end result is quite different from what I anticipated.

Footprints and Nature

The intent of these abstract paintings is to explore the idea of the natural world. By keeping the compositions simple, I can focus on balancing colours, values and, texture. As well, in my Monoprint pieces I used marks or impressions left behind by living creatures in nature, such as patterns and textures created by fossils and animal footprints that, to me, represent the first stage or beginning of art.
