Wesmen volleyball teams sweep Thompson Rivers

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen volleyball teams swept their at-home series against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Nov. 28 and 29.

The teams met on Saturday afternoon for the first matches, with the women starting off the winning streak. After two hard-fought matches in Brandon the weekend before, the Wesmen came out against the WolfPack determined to do whatever it would take to win.

In the first set, the Wesmen won 25-20. The second set was much the same, with the Wesmen defeating the WolfPack 25-16. An aggressive WolfPack stole the third set and overpowered the Wesmen, 25-15, which pushed the match into a fourth set.

The Wesmen came back with vengeance in the fourth and won the set, 25-23.

The Wesmen men fed women’s energy and defeated Thompson Rivers in four sets. The Wesmen won the first set, 27-25; the second set, 25-19; and dropped the third set, 21-25.

The Wesmen fought back and won the fourth and final set, 25-18.

On Sunday afternoon, the Wesmen volleyball teams finished out the first half of their seasons on a high note. The men felt confident going into the last match of the first half of season.

“We had broken our little slump and had played a great match Saturday. I knew that if we put that effort together again we would be in a good situation to win Sunday,” said Justin Duff.

The team took the match convincingly in three sets: 25-19, 25-21, 25-23.

The women finished off the sweep in the last match of the weekend. They won the first two sets. After dropping the third set to the Wolfpack, the Wesmen were fired up to finish the match in the fourth set.

“There was no excuse to lose the third set. Mentally we just let the wheels fall off. In the fourth set there was no way we weren’t winning,” said Alix Krahn, whose final two hits sealed the win, 25-21.
