Wesmen head to Calgary for mixed results

Loss tough for women, but team played hard, coach says

The Wesmen made their way to Calgary this weekend and faced the Calgary Dinos for some heated competition.

The Wesmen women cracked open the season with an 81-79 victory on Friday, Oct. 30. Caitie Gooch garnered a game high of 26 points, helped by four three-pointers. This was followed by Amy Ogidan with 17 and Mackenzie Prasek with 17 including three three-pointers and three assists.

“Calgary played tough aggressive defense, we settled down in the fourth and did a better job taking care of the ball. Caity Gooch was a factor down the stretch for us,” said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.

The men did not fare quite as well, losing to Calgary 94-56. The team was bolstered by high-scorer Nick Lother with 24 points, the game high, and Peter Lomuro with 16 points.

Saturday saw Calgary making a comeback, edging ahead of the Wesmen women 87-81. Catie Gooch again led the charge with 21 points, followed by Alex MacIver with 13, including 9 rebounds.

Once again, Head Coach Tanya McKay took the loss in stride.

“It was a tough loss, but the team played hard. A split on the road is good,” said McKay.

The men suffered another loss on Saturday, yielding to the Dinos 96-55. A solid effort was put in by Peter Lomuro, the Wesmen’s top scorer with 16 points. He was followed closely by Nick Lother with 14. Mark Ridd upped the ante with six rebounds for the Wesmen.

The Wesmen headed home and the women will go head to head with the Alberta Pandas on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 6-7) at 6 p.m., while the men will face off against the Alberta Golden Bears Friday and Saturday (Nov. 6-7) at 8 p.m.
