Filipino all-stars play Duckworth Centre

Lipenos Basketball League showcases talent from players as young as 20

International and local stars of Filipino basketball came out on Friday, Oct. 30, to play three exhibition games and scout talent for the Philippine Basketball Association.

Though the games were all in fun, the scouting of local talent is serious business for the Lipenos Basketball League, who showcased both male and female talent from players as young as 20.

Retired pros from the Philippines came out to play, stopping at the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre as part of a 10-day, cross-Canada tour.

“We are excited to be here. This is special for us,” said Paul Alvarez, a pro-player who retired in 2005.

Organizer and commissioner of the LBL Manny Aranez explained that this is the first time the players have come here for such an occasion and said players being scouted to play pro in the Phillippines included Josh Olaes, Jomar Huertas and Eric Garcia.

The first game saw the Versatile team versus the Winnipeg team, with Winnipeg winning 71-50. Leading the way for Winnipeg was Cassey Ordonez with 21 points, and Versatile’s Rose Tapia stood out with 20.

Game two saw the boys hold court with Winnipeg versus the Wolverines, who beat team Winnipeg 62-60. Rodel Aarron led the Wolverines with 17 points.

The final game of evening saw PBA versus Winnipeg’s Best, with 79-76 as the final score in favor of PBA. Standouts included Gerry Esplana of PBA with 17 points and 23 points for Prince Cayetano.
