Security threat update

A message scrawled on a University of Winnipeg bathroom wall threatening violence April 1 has been judged to be low risk by Winnipeg police and the University of Winnipeg.
The university will remain open on Wednesday, April 1 and all classes and activities will continue as normal.
“This was judged as low risk, so business as usual,” said U of W director of communications and marketing Shawn Coates,
However, according to a security advisory, the U of W is “exercising caution.”
“All faculty and staff should maintain their normal work schedules,” states the advisory. “Students who choose not to attend class should make appropriate arrangements with their professors.”
The university made updates to their security system after a similar threat was found on a bathroom stall in September 2007.
Increased measures include an enhanced camera monitoring system, a PA system that allows for quick messaging during an emergency, and a remote locking system on exterior doors that allows students to exit the building but doesn’t allow more students to enter, Coates said.
Students will not have to undergo bag searches on April 1, he added.
