From Delhi 2 Dublin and back again

Describing Delhi 2 Dublin can be a complicated task. The five-piece from Vancouver formed back in March of 2006, thanks to a one-off collaboration that went extremely well, and they have been defying genres ever since.

“It’s a mashup of Celtic, Punjabi, electronic and then all sorts of other stuff,” says Tarun Nayar who handles tabla and electronics for the band.

“Other stuff” can include a bit of reggae, breakbeat, drum n’ bass, hip hop, and a wide range of other things.

“It’s really a mixed bag and we really try to bring all those influences into what we’re doing. We don’t limit ourselves to a genre,” explains Nayar.

The band, which also includes Kytami LeBlanc (fiddle), Sanjay Seran (vox), Andrew Kim (electric sitar, guitar), and Ravi Binning (dhol), released their first album Delhi 2 Dublin in December of 2007, followed by a remix of the album one year later.

Nayar says not a lot has changed in the band between their debut and the release of their latest album Planet Electric released in May of this year.

“In terms of the actual releases I think what the second [album] did was capture what we do live a little bit better. [We] put a lot more energy into trying to capture that feeling, and I think we’ve gotten a bit closer.”

Capturing D2D’s sound could be quiet complicated, they promise to bring jumping, sweating, stage diving, yelling, and of course some music to the sold out West End Cultural Centre on Monday, Nov. 22.

When their current tour ends next month, Delhi 2 Dublin will be exporting their particular brand of world music to such exotic locations as Las Vegas, Dubai and India. Visit www.delhi2dublin.com for more info.

Show starts at 7:00. Tickets are $22 in advance and $27 at the door.
