Winnipeg’s blogosphere buzzing
We’ve written about Winnipeg’s bloggers and blogging community in the past.
And lately it seems our blogosphere has been buzzing a lot more, with new blogs entering the fray, and existing blogs gaining in popularity.
From the serious to the not-so-serious, here’s what I’ve been following a lot more in the past months, and what deserve to be on your reading lists:
News/Urban issues
The Crime Scene
Blog of CBC reporter and former Free Press crime reporter James Turner. Great discussion of crime issues in Winnipeg.
Turner’s Police Public Reporting Project – which compares daily court dockets to what the Winnipeg Police Service public information office releases to the media, and thus the public – is an illuminating read. It shows you just how our police media relations works, and how much crime actually goes on daily in our city.

Policing, Politics and Public Policy
Blog of former Winnipeg deputy police chief Menno Zacharias. Interesting insights as to how the WPS operates, and how crime policy affects real policing on the streets.

Endless Spin Cycle
A former Brandon Sun reporter and editor, Curtis Brown now works for Probe Research. Provides insight and context to most, if not all, poll-driven stories you read/see in local news. Doesn’t seem to hide his NDP slant, but great reads nonetheless.
State of the City
Brian Kelcey was the budget advisor to Sam Katz from 2005-2008. A smart urban policy wonk, Kelcey often gives valuable insight from his time in city hall, and offers smart discussion on urban issues facing Winnipeg. But the blog is so much more than that. Kelcey also meticulously collects and posts mayors’ state of the city speeches from across Canada and the U.S

IFoundYourCamera
Yeah, shameless self promotion, so what? With over five million views in two years from across the world, my blog has help reunite over two dozen lost cameras with their original owners. I try to update the blog a few times a week, but I’ll be honest, sometimes I fall behind.
Winnipeg Love and Hate / All The Way To Nowhere
You probably read about Bryan Scott in the latest issue of the Uniter. If you didn’t, you should. Simply stunning photography. Updated daily, this is a must read. Winnipeg Love and Hate is comprised of pictures of Winnipeg (duh), while All The Way To Nowhere is a collection of Scott’s pictures from his sojourns around the world.

Painting Over Silence
Everything music in Winnipeg: local profiles, concert listings and interviews with touring bands. Of course, don’t let it replace your weekly dose of music coverage in the pages of our fine publication!

Winnipeg Downtown Places
Run by the same guy who writes West End Dumplings (who actually runs a ton of blogs). This aim of this blog, in its own words, is to “provide an index of the projects, buildings and places around downtown that make it an interesting place to be.”

Winnipeg Cat
The humour never runs dry for James Howard. As if Slurpees and Murder wasn’t enough, Howard has given us this gem of blog based off several other Internet memes. Except in our case, it’s a wise-cracking cat with glowing eyes making quips and ridiculing Winnipeg news.
