By-elections: Bye, elections. New UWSA Board Members

Good evening, friends, enemies ... frienemies,

I just arrived home from Ottawa where I was kindly accepted to act as a UWSA delegate at the CFS AGM (Canadian Federation of Students’ Annual General Meeting). I’d like to first extend thanks to the UWSA for including me in participating at the AGM as a student delegate.

The UWSA by-election results came out during that time. The total number of voters was 292, which is 69 more than last year’s by-election, but still in the neighborhood of about 3% voter turn-out.

All yes/no candidates were voted into their positions. The only contested spot was the CFS (Canadian Federation of Students) liaison director position, which was won by a 79 vote differential in favor of Carly Sloshower.

Results of the uncontested constituencies are as follows:

Fabien Suarez-Amaya won Education Director with 245 votes for and 23 against. Janna and Kaitlin Young opted to run as a co-directorship (still only one vote in the board room, ladies). They won 254 yes, 15 no. The International Students’ Directorship will be filled by Oluwaseun Lloyd Kuyinu (250:15) Part-Time/Mature Students’ Director: Graham Smith-Peloquin, 236 yea, 25 nay. Despite the high likelihood of winning the uncontested constituency, Graham still insisted on putting up posters saying that he wants to hear from mature & part-time students. So contact Graham. The new Status of Women director, Joan Medland won with the greatest amount of ‘no’ votes, 35. 253 in favor of Medland. Reid Olnick can now put to use going to every single Wesmen game as the Recreation and Athletrics Director. Reid won 235:21. The Director of Student Living ballot closed with Bradley Muller winning 247:23.

I always wonder who voted “no” and why.

But more to the point… Congratulations to all the new UWSA board members, I look forward to following up with all of you. As well, I urge all students who identify with any of these constituencies and make them aware of the issues. There are a lot of directors so put them to use. They’re here to represent you and I. Let’s have them do that.
