Student research project recognized by TRC

Project focused on reconciliation in a Canadian residential school context

A group of University of Winnipeg Global College students presented their research project on reconciliation to an audience including representatives from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Nicki Ferland, Bobbie Whiteman and Janna Barkman presented “Exploring and Defining Reconciliation” at the U of W in conjunction with the Global College.

The human rights and global studies students’ project included a research report and video focusing on first-hand interviews of residential school survivors and other event participants from this summer’s Truth and Reconciliation event in Winnipeg.

Their research aimed to define reconciliation in regards to residential schools in a Canadian context.

TRC commissioners Chief Wilton Littlechild and Marie Wilson attended the presentation and spoke of the project as another step in the process towards reconciliation.

The project was privately funded by the students.
