For the last eight years ‘Peg City Groove has been a place for Winnipeggers to keep up with the local music scene and it’s still going strong.

Hosted by Kent Davies and Darryl Reilly, the show airs on Fridays at 5 p.m. and basically started because there was nothing on CKUW dedicated to covering local bands at the time.

“In the beginning we were kind of just hounding our friends to come on the show, but now we’re getting booked solid a month in advance with bands that are reaching out to us due to word of mouth,” Davies says.

The main goal of the show is to promote shows that are happening on the weekends and give attention to up-and-coming Winnipeg talent. The show has also served as a place for bands to perform and premiere some of the new material that they’ve been working on, such as M&M Meats, a garage rock trio that was on the show near the end of November before playing a gig at the Windsor Hotel.

“We really wanted to create a sort of infomercial for local bands to come on where they would lead the conversation and talk about what they want to discuss,” Davies says, adding that another 2014 highlight was being able to dedicate an episode to the Cootie Club, a community group that strives to create safe space for all people in the local music scene.

Ultimately ‘Peg City Groove has lasted eight years because the guys are just so impressed with the musicians making music in our city.

“The local music scene has just gotten so good, especially over the last while and we’re glad that we can step up and put something like this together,” Davies says.
