Re: Tensions mount at UWSA AGM
-
Sounds like Bosc took that ambush like a champ. I remember last year’s AGM where an approx. $14k cut was made to the ASC and the budget was (ninja) passed without much debate. I didn’t, personally, have time to attend this meeting but it sounds like the opposite happened this year.

Respectfully correcting the above statement: the ASC budget for 2010-2011 was not cut by 14K, rather, it was reduced from approximately 14K to 7K, based on actuals from the previous fiscal year. This year, the UWSA prioritized consultation with students, student groups, coordinators, and internal departments within the UWSA when drafting the budget. Based on these consultations, the UWSA presented a fiscally responsible budget, with a projected deficit of 63K (compared to the 157K deficit for the 2010-2011 budget). This budget recommendation included ceasing Soma Cafe’s operations by April 30th and a proportional reduction in expenditures for all departments within the UWSA. While balancing the UWSA’s financial reality with student needs & demands, we made budgetary compromises without significantly hindering the level of services provided to students.
The UWSA is a member driven organization and we welcome students’ concerns and feedbacks. At the AGM, they identified their priorities and the budget for 2011-2012 has been amended accordingly. If students have any questions about the budget and/or about the UWSA’s AGM, please contact any one of the Executives and we can hopefully answer your queries.

This article has left me confused.
How will/could the deficit be eliminated?
What are the consequences of eliminating the CFS Liason?
What does the Aboriginal Student Council do and why do they need a budget increase?None of these questions are answered (or even explicitly posed) by this article.

This is a poorly written piece which is obviously misconstrued by a journalistic bias and seriously lacks information that would be beneficial for the reader. Why did this writer not even consider contacting the VP Internal who headed the drafting of the proposed budget? Why would the writer contact the retail services manager without initially contacting the Board since they are the head spokespeople? The writer obviously lacks knowledge of the organization which clearly translates in this article.
