CanWest volleyball playoffs begin

Two Manitoba teams advance to the Can West Final Four

Wesmen volleyball teams wrapped up their seasons during the weekend of Feb. 11 and 12, but four Manitoba teams participated in the first round of CanWest playoffs. On the women’s side, the University of Manitoba Bison advanced to the final four to represent Manitoba, while on the men’s side the Brandon University Bobcats will proceed to the next round.

On the weekend of Feb. 18-20, Brandon University’s men’s team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons in a 2-1 series. Brandon will advance to the CanWest final four, where they will take on the #1 ranked Alberta Golden Bears, who had a bye into the final four tournament.

The University of Calgary men’s team swept the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, 3-1. They will also advance to the final four where they will come up against the Trinity Western Spartans, who swept Thompson Rivers 2-0 in the quarter finals.

On the women’s side, it was the University of British Columbia who had the bye in first round play offs. The Alberta Pandas swept Calgary 2-0 in Edmonton, while the Manitoba Bison also swept the Brandon University Bobcats. 

In the final series of the CanWest women’s volleyball quarter finals, Trinity Western defeated the Regina Cougars with their own 2-0 sweep. 

The second round of playoffs will begin Feb. 24.

For the women, the final four will take place in British Columbia, at the University of British Columbia. The men’s final four will be held in Edmonton, at the University of Alberta.
