Canadian students blast off

Four students from the universities of Alberta, Calgary and Saskatchewan will have the opportunity to take a course on sounding rockets and payload instrument design offered by the University of Oslo in Norway.

The week-long course runs from Nov. 9 to 13, giving students the chance to launch their own small payloads from the Andoya Rocket Range in northern Norway.

Some hope this course will evolve into a 10-year exchange program with Norway called CaNoRock (The Canadian-Norway Rocket Exchange).

The three universities are guaranteed at least one spot in the course, with the fourth up for grabs for applicable students based on GPA and career aspirations.

CKUW releases Transmissions

CKUW has compiled 18 songs recorded live at the station, or specifically for broadcast on the station, and made them available online for the first time. The songs were originally released in 2004 as a CD titled Transmissions, which was only available during that year’s Fundrive.

This album includes songs by The Weakerthans, The Wailin’ Jennys, Nathan and others. To celebrate their tenth anniversary, CKUW is offering the songs for free on their website.

Anyone who donates $120 to CKUW will get the Transmissions CD along with the deluxe booklet and notes.

Green cleaning products to be used on campus

The University of Winnipeg’s new food services will use only eco-friendly cleaning products. Keeping with the university’s commitment to create an environmentally sustainable campus and community, Diversity Food Services Inc. will use phosphate-free dishwashing detergent, counter sanitizers and floor cleaners.

The changes are part of a 2005 commitment to factor environmental impacts into all decisions made by the university.

Diversity operates Pangea’s Kitchen (Riddell Hall), Malecon (Centennial Hall) and Café Bodhi (Lockhart), and also caters meals for campus and external functions.

Age of Stupid screening at U of W

The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association will be screening The Age of Stupid on Thursday, Oct. 15 in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall.

The movie is a drama-documentary-animation hybrid about a man, played by Oscar-nominee Pete Postlethwaite, living in 2055. As he watches “archive” footage from 2008, he asks why we didn’t stop climate change when we had the chance.

The movie uses the latest predictions from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the science in the film is based on peer-reviewed papers, according to the movie’s website.

Queer-support open for business

The LGBT* Collective will begin offering queer peer support for this academic year. The centre has experienced volunteers willing to help with issues regarding gender and sexuality.

“Queer peer support offers comfortable and confidential peer counseling for those with sexual confusion, anxiety or other types of hardship. It’s for those seeking help or advice from people who have been in similar situations,” said Lia Zarrillo, a first-year student and volunteer. Volunteers come from varied backgrounds and ages.

For times and information, check out the LGBT* centre located at OR13 in the Bulman Centre.
