Another win for the Wesmen

The Wesmen Women’s Basketball Team finished off a 64-41 win over home team the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The Cascades took a short lead midway through the first half. Jane Meadwell and Alyssa Gaukel were both the top scorers for the Cascades this quarter.

It didn’t take very long, however, for the Wesmen to grasp the lead for the first time. A basket from Sarah Reilly and Mackenzie Prasek’s twin free throws pushed the Wesmen to a 8-7 lead.

The Cascades scored a three-pointer in the final minute of the first quarter, but it wasn’t big enough to take the lead. The Wesmen carried off the first quarter with a 15-12 score.

The second quarter brought a different story. The Cascades started it off with five baskets, four minutes in. Kaitlin Rempel and Randie Gibson countered with another five. While the Cascades had a decent chance at the 34 second mark tossing in a three-pointer, they still left the end of the second with a 27-24 Winnipeg advantage.

During the third quarter, the Wesmen took flight with an 8-1 run. With heavy defense, the Wesmen maintained a big enough lead. Winnipeg outscored the Cascades by 8-4.

By the end of the third quarter the Cascades’s home advantage wasn’t paying off. The third quarter ended 45-32 for the Wesmen.

The Wesmen kept a strong fourth quarter, where they scored 19 points, the highest scoring for the game. The Cascades lost to the Wesmen, 64-41, while the Wesmen came home to Winnipeg with another win under their belts. This win brings Winnipeg’s record to 6-4 in the Canada West Conference.

The Wesmen women will be heading to Kamloops next week to battle with the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.
