Journalism awards celebrate contributions made by Uniter staff and volunteers
Nine awards presented at inaugural event

Manitoba, a feature on skateboarding and a surreal photo of a woman wearing a rabbit mask were just three of the winners at the first-ever Uniter Journalism Awards.
Awards were presented in nine categories during the inaugural celebration, which took place on Sunday, May 16 during a dinner at the Lo Pub.
“We want to recognize the hard work our staff and volunteer contributors did for the paper this past school year,” said Aaron Epp, managing editor of The Uniter. He noted that more than 140 students and community members contributed articles, photos, illustrations and puzzles to the 25 issues published between September 2009 and April 2010.
“With school, part-time work, volunteering and other commitments many people have, it’s great that they still make time to contribute to The Uniter,” Epp said.
Awards were presented for Best News Writing; Best Sports, Fitness and Health Writing; Best Comments Writing; Best Arts and Culture Writing; Best Review Writing; Best Blog Writing; Best Illustration; Best Photography; and Best Cover and Layout/Design. (See sidebar for winners.)
The awards were judged by Paul Samyn, city editor at the Winnipeg Free Press; Mary Agnes Welch, reporter at the Winnipeg Free Press; Cecil Rosner, managing editor at CBC Manitoba; Darryl Brown, designer at Geez magazine; Aiden Enns, editor at Geez magazine; and Maria Bowler, president of the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association Photography Club.
The awards were presented by The Uniter and Mouseland Press Inc., the board of directors that publishes the paper.
