Grant supports U of W’s Eco-Kids program
Universitity of Winnipeg’s Enbridge Eco-kids program has received a $25,000 grant from Enbridge. The program’s goal is to increase inner-city graduation rates by providing students with fun and educational opportunities. Once a week for 10 weeks, students from Grades 5 and 6 will come to the University of Winnipeg campus to participate in science-related activities. This includes blood typing, squid dissection, DNA sampling and construction of machines. The activities will be led by education students, collegiate teachers and science professors. The grant itself will cover the supplies and equipment for the activities, as well as food and transportation for the kids.
CKUW’s FUNdraiser
To help support CKUW, the University of Winnipeg’s non-profit radio station, a series of fundraising events are being held. The station’s annual FUNdrive kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 4 at the Platform Gallery, showcasing musicians J.R. Hill and Ultra Mega. FUNdrive T-shirts will be available at events for those who pledge $60 or more. The FUNdrive will close on Friday, Feb. 12 after the final event at Lo Pub featuring The Playing Cards. The CKUW is a “listener oriented, listener supported” radio station and although it’s permitted to air advertising, the station prefers support from its listeners.
Business icons donate $4 million to U of W
Philanthropists and business icons John and Bonnie Buhler have donated $4 million to the University of Winnipeg. The faculty of business and economics, which is to be situated at the Buhler Center, currently under construction at 460 Portage Ave., will receive $3 million of the donation. The additional $1 million will be put towards the Buhler Knowledge Access Fund, dedicated to providing business and economics students with scholarships. The Buhler Centre will contain state-of-the-art technology and classrooms to help support one of U of W’s fastest growing faculties. Both John and Bonnie Buhler hope that the new building will play a large part in revitalizing downtown Winnipeg.
What do you think of your school?
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and Canadian University Survey Consortium (CUSC) are asking University of Winnipeg students what they really think about their school. An online survey is currently being conducted which allows students to rate all aspects of their school. This includes everything from the instruction and teaching students have received to the general campus community. Both the NSSE and CUSC are organizations dedicated to developing a more in-depth understanding of the undergraduate population. The survey is available via U of W’s home page.
Women & Justice theme to social justice fair
On Wednesday, Feb. 10, Menno Simons College and the Global College are presenting a social justice fair with the theme of Women & Justice.
The event will take place on the second floor of the Duckworth Centre from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Three feature events will discuss the unique impact of war on women, the access First Nations women have to justice and the possibility of limits to Canada’s “responsibility to protect.”
Guest speakers include Nahanni Fontaine and Marilou McPhedran.
The Social Justice Fair is a free event, open to the public where students and the community can learn about issues related to peace and justice at home and internationally.
