An uneven weekend for the Wesmen basketball teams
The Wesmen women fared better than the men on the weekend, pulling off a win against the UBC Thunderbirds. by Jill Brown
It was two very different stories for the Wesmen men’s and women’s basketball teams Nov. 27-28.
The women had an impressive performance, splitting their games with a win and a loss, while the men couldn’t gather any momentum against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds or the University of Victoria Vikings.
In the Friday, Nov. 27 game, starting forward and co-captain Jessica Stromberg led the women to a 67-63 win over the Thurderbirds. She scored 16 points and earned an impressive 10 rebound recoveries, including one in the final minutes of the game, ending a UBC attempt at a fourth-quarter comeback. Stromberg sank two free-throws that put the game out of reach.
Saturday night’s game against Victoria ended with opposite results. The Wesmen kept the game within reach until the last minute of the fourth quarter when they failed to make a comeback, losing 60-50 to the Vikes. Alex MacIver made her presence known on the court with 12 points and 8 rebound recoveries in the game.
Fans got a bit of a scare as Wesmen weekend-MVP Caitlin Gooch took a nasty spill in the second half. Not to worry though. Gooch said after the game that we can look forward to seeing her in their next game at the end of December.
Gooch led her team on the weekend with a combined total of 25 points, including four three-pointers and 12 rebound recoveries.
It was a very different story for the men’s team, who lost both games: 45-28 to UBC and 43-20 against Victoria.
The Wesmen found themselves in a very tough spot for Friday night’s game. Post Adam Dobriansky was taken out of the game due to injury with 3:08 left in the fourth. He did not return to the lineup Saturday.
Head coach Dave Crook said Dobriansky has some severe swelling in his leg, but preliminary reports of his injury “look very positive.”
Fourth-year wing Peter Lomuro led the men this weekend with a total of 24 points and 6 rebound recoveries.
