The session introduces a proven workflow - peppered with tips, tools and examples - for acquiring, processing, analyzing and presenting data from a variety of sources. Topics covered include: simple strategies for filing, tracking and handling Freedom of Information (FOI) requests; finding and querying online databases; extracting data from documents to build a dataset; basic and advanced tools for analyzing, collaborating and managing investigative data projects.
Michael Pereira is a data journalist and developer who spends his days pulling data from (sometimes unwilling) sources and extracting meaning for editors and readers. Past projects include national and local focus on topics ranging from crime and social justice to the environment and the economy. His award-winning work has appeared on CBC, The Globe and Mail and The Winnipeg Free Press.
