Field Recording : listening to a sound

This workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore their own relationship with sound and gain the basic understanding of the equipment needed to record sound in the field or any where you can take a mobile recording device. The structure of the workshop will be shaped by the participants own artistic + technical experience/interests in field recording with the intention of making the content relevant to all as we learn to listen from new perspectives. 

Dates:  Thursday, August 22, 2019 (6pm-9pm)

Fees:  $60 member / $80 non-member

Location: Video Pool Studio (300 – 100 Arthur St.)

Instructor: Joel Mierau

About the instructor:

Joel Mierau is a sound artist and recordist working with sound as composition, performance, improvisation, and documentation.  They are an improvising non-musician as a member of the trio Existers. Joel’s solo performances/compositions are based around the use of field recordings, found sounds/objects, amplification, and silhouettes that weave between the conscious and sub-conscious worlds leaving traces of intentions + identity resting on an opaque blanket of sound. 

As a sound recordist Joel has other professional experience in the roles of studio recording engineer, location sound mixer/recordist, instructor, and sound archivist, documenting sound for live performances. Joel is also a board member/treasurer of send + receive: a festival of sound and of Video Pool Media Arts Centre.
