Come to the University of Manitoba for a screening and discussion of The Ninth Floor https://www.nfb.ca/film/ninth_floor/.  Whether perceived or remembered as a riot or as a peaceful sit-in, this event is an undeniable yet largely unknown part of the history of Canadian race relations and civil rights.  Over 200 students gathered to protest the handling of a complaint of racial bias at Sir George Williams University.  On February 11, 1969, riot police forcefully removed protesters who had barricaded themselves on the ninth floor of the Henry F. Hall Building at the university.  Of those arrested, one was Anne Clare Cools, who would become the first black female senator in North America, serving from 1984 to 2018.
