Tanya Tagaq follows up her 2014 Polaris Prize winning album ‘Animism’ with ‘Retribution’, an even more musically and politically aggressive, powerful, spine tingling masterpiece.
This album is about rape: rape of women, rape of the land, rape of children, despoiling of traditional lands without consent. The last track of the album is a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Rape Me’ and is at least a hundred times more chilling than the original.
‘Retribution’ is Tagaq’s portrait of a violent world in crisis, a cohesive, whole statement, a complex, exhilarating, howling protest that links lack of respect for women’s rights to lack of respect for the planet to a lack of respect for Indigenous rights.
