The Uniter is hiring for the 2019/2020 production season

We have a few editorial and reporting positions open for fall 2019. The closing date for all of these applications will be July 23 at noon. We will be holding interviews from July 30 to August 1, and the start date for these positions will be between August 13 and 16.

We will prioritize qualified applicants belonging to groups whose experiences are underrepresented in mainstream media (for example, applicants who are Indigenous, Black, POC, disabled, LGBTQ+, and/or who identify as part of a group not listed here.) Applicants belonging to any of these groups are encouraged to self-declare.

Features editor

The Uniter is seeking a skilled, diplomatic and well-informed person to fill the role of features editor. This person should have experience editing others and providing feedback on writing to their peers.

Successful candidates should feel comfortable maintaining an editorial calendar, helping to shape and direct written and visual-based cover features, editing their peers’ work, providing feedback, organizing meetings and staying informed about current issues in many of Winnipeg’s diverse communities.

Applicants should have a flexible schedule and be available for editorial meetings, section meetings and mentorship during the regular academic year (late-August to early December/January to April.) Daytime meetings usually occur on Thursdays.

This position pays $250/week. The features editor will begin their term in mid-August following an orientation.

City editor

The Uniter is seeking a dedicated, politically minded and well-connected person to fill the role of city editor. This person should have experience and a passion for writing about such topics as local news, student issues, community events, Wesmen athletes and more.

Successful candidates should feel comfortable running a team of contributors, assigning and editing their work, providing feedback, organizing meetings and building relationships with Winnipeg’s downtown urban community.  

Applicants should have a flexible schedule and be available for editorial meetings, section meetings and mentorship during the regular academic year (late-August to early December/January to April.) Daytime meetings usually happen on Thursdays.

This position pays $250/week. The city editor will begin their term in mid-August following an orientation.

Comments editor

The Uniter is seeking an opinionated, politically-minded and well-connected person to fill the role of Comments Editor. This person should have experience and a passion for writing editorials and understand what it means to curate an opinion section of a newspaper.  

Successful candidates should feel comfortable running a team of contributors, assigning and editing their work, providing feedback, organizing meetings and building relationships with our local on- and off-campus community.  

Applicants should have a flexible schedule and be available for editorial meetings, section meetings and mentorship during the regular academic year (late-August to early December/January to April.) Most daytime meetings happen on Thursdays.

This position pays $250/week. The Comments Editor will begin their term in mid-August following an orientation.

Arts and culture reporter

The Uniter is seeking an individual who is passionate about Winnipeg’s arts and culture scene to fill the position of arts and culture reporter. This person should be equally comfortable exploring the realms of music, visual arts, theatre, literature, dance, food, and more.

The successful candidate will possess strong writing and interviewing skills, and have their finger on the pulse of the many thriving scenes on campus and across the city.

The Uniter is seeking an individual who is passionate about interviewing and showcasing interesting individuals in Winnipeg to fill the position of features reporter. This person should be comfortable speaking to people from a wide range of backgrounds and building trust within communities both on and off campus.

The successful candidate will possess strong writing and interviewing skills, and have their finger on the pulse of the many thriving scenes in Winnipeg.

Campus Reporter

The Uniter is seeking a hardworking student/alumni and experienced writer who is passionate about campus politics, news and events to fill the position of Campus Reporter.

The successful candidate will possess strong research and interviewing skills as well as demonstrate a critical eye for news content.

Columnist

The Uniter is seeking an individual who can develop reflections around lived experience and expand them to better explore a topic they are passionate about. The columnist will develop the overall concept for their series in partnership with the managing editor, and will publish a column on a rotating basis (once every four issues) with other columnists.

High school or university education is not a prerequisite for columnists. Columnists would be able to complete the work remotely, however, they should be primarily based in or around Winnipeg.
