Tasers? Of course! But even don’t think of spanking…

Posted by Stacy Cardigan Smith

This story on CBC Manitoba involves a girl who is suing the RCMP for allegedly Tasering her while she was locked up in jail. She claims that four male officers held her down while she was in her cell in the Selkirk jail and then Tasered her. At the time of the incident, she was 16-years-old.

Sure, this girl wasn’t perfect - in fact, the article touches on the fact she had been caught drunk in her parents’ van prior to being arrested. However, she was still a 16-year-old girl and all teenagers make mistakes. Furthermore, she was already in jail at the time she was allegedly held down - if she was already subdued in her cell, why was the Taser necessary?

If parents aren’t allowed to spank their children, how can we allow police officers to torture them? I can see the case for Tasers in some instances, but if the 16-year-old’s allegations turn out to be true, it looks like the old boys’ club took advantage of the trust and power society gives them.
