The Local Heavy: Sylvie at Lo Pub, Nov. 14
A last minute addition to their cross Canada tour brought Regina’s Sylvie to the Lo Pub on Nov. 14. Too bad this show wasn’t properly advertised because Sylvie were in top form. Touring in support of their latest record, Trees and Shade are our Only Fences, Sylvie sounded tight and urgent, … (more) -

Getting through a grey month
This is one of my least favourite times of year. November. In November the trees are bare, the grey looms threateningly, and I’ve suddenly realized that I have about four weeks to write a number of massive papers. Every now and then autumn tantalizes us by reappearing briefly, only to be … (more) -

The Facade of Winnipeg
I remember being excited by downtown shopping sprees when I was a kid. The traditional Paddlewheel stop was at the top of our family’s must do liss back then. I remember the crowds and the aura of electricity whenever we visited. A few weeks ago I had a class in which … (more) -

Winnipeg is getting harder… to live in.
The rental vacancy rate for Manitoba was 1% last spring. I doubt much has changed since then. There’s simply not enough affordable apartments. But, we’ve still got some of the cheapest rents in Canada. (more) -

Get out and vote!
Today is the final day to vote in the UWSA by-elections. You can’t miss the poling station in the Riddell Atrium adorned with festive pink balloons. Nine director positions are open. Clearly (see my article in last week’s Uniter) there are some issues surrounding clarity on what exactly directors do, especially … (more) -

send + receive, Oct. 25 2008
For the closing night of the festival, send + receive curated a devastatingly beautiful - and loud - line-up. First up was Montreal’s Alexandre St-Onge, whose set consisted of laptop treated six-string bass and bizarre vocals, half falsetto and half sinus clearing hoarks. While I’d like to think I am pretty … (more) -

The voice of reason: Citizens more concerned with environment than politicians
This week, I would like to talk about citizen-led responses to environmental concerns. The latest unnecessary election showed us that political leaders are more focused on bickering amongst themselves than coming up with real solutions for climate change: The Conservatives wouldn’t release actual greenhouse gas targets and real details about their … (more) -

The Local Heavy #2: Pinback Concert Review
Welcome back to the latest installment of The Local Heavy. I think The Local Heavy is going to be the name of this blog. It’s a pretty good name I guess. No, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, grammatically speaking, but that’s what you kids are into these days … (more) -

The power of the ellipses…
We just read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby in the American Lit. class I’m taking. I’d read it in high school, but reading it again - after studying quite a bit more literature - was quite rewarding and allowed for different interpretations to arise. One of the most interesting interpretations that a classmate brought … (more) -

Comeback Kid’s Andrew Neufeld talks about Sights & Sounds
When I caught up with Andrew Neufeld of Comeback Kid on Sept. 30 to interview him for the CBK article that appears in this week’s issue of The Uniter, he was in Gibsons, a small coastal community in southwestern B.C., with his other band, Sights & Sounds. The band was there … (more) - Page 12 of 15 :: « First < 10 11 12 13 14 > Last »
